Demonstration Meeting Successful
- Seventy participants from seven different countries attended the first copper
motor rotor demonstration meeting in Denver, Colorado, January 29. Dr. John Cowie,
CDA vice president of strip, sheet and plate and program manager of the project,
said the meeting “marked an important step toward commercialization of this exciting
new technology.”

The Next Step: Further Testing and Promotion
- Despite the economic and environmental benefits of switching to copper motor rotors,
cast copper rotors have yet to be commercialized. Advanced Energy, an independent
nonprofit organization in Raleigh, North Carolina, hopes to propel this new
technology from the testing lab to the factory floor.

Engineering Institute Weighs-in on Efficiency
While President George Bush’s proposed energy policy lingers in the shadows of the Enron disaster, the use of more energy-efficient products and practices in the USA remains crucial to temper the nation’s growing energy demand. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-USA (IEEE-USA), a professional society of engineers, released its official position on energy efficiency in November 2001. It states, in part: “As the demand for energy continues to grow, new energy efficient technologies can play an increasingly important role in moderating the growth in new energy resources needed to meet that demand.”
