Secret to Die Casting Copper Revealed -
The greatest challenge of the copper motor rotor project has not been to die cast copper, but to die cast it economically. A fundamental understanding of the failure of past trials – namely short die life – has been the focus of current research. It was decided in the early phases of the project that the steel traditionally used in dies to cast aluminum rotors needed to be replaced with a high-temperature material suitable for molten copper. Numerous candidate materials were tested.

Energy Crisis in Brazil: Higher-Efficiency Motors in Demand
- As utilities throughout the world struggle to keep pace with ever-increasing energy consumption, a whole new market for energy-efficient motors in consumer products is emerging. In May, a severe energy crisis in Brazil prompted a government-mandated rationing program that ordered every household in the nation to cut energy use by 20 percent. As consumers unplugged and adjusted their definition of convenience, sales of washing machines, dishwashers and other everyday appliances plummeted.

Campaign Targets Motor Efficiency
- A large industrial mill or plant can spend upwards of $1 million annually on energy costs. The Motor Decisions MatterSM campaign, launched by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE) along with a number of sponsors including the Copper Development Association and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aims to help businesses control these costs through better motor management.
